At last, the two-year intense research on, the open-source plug-in software, O3D by Google has paid off. The recently released plug-in is expected to propel web developers to explore on what can be done with 3D in the internet. O3D is the latest browser plug-in from Google compatible with IE, Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome that works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. O3D provides an interface that taps JavaScript programs directly into the systems graphics chip thus improving user experience when it comes to games and other graphic applications.
Although 3D web concepts emerged in early 1990s along with the technology known as Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML), it wasn’t of great success then. However, today’s internet has greatly improved in every aspect, such as the technology involved and the mindset of the web users. It is not absurd to expect O3D to be a super hit among the internet users and especially enthusiastic lovers of internet games.
With Mozilla and Khronos working toward building a 3D web interface, the vatic voice of Google on 3D web browsers may soon become a reality. Although 3D web is likely to benefit Google applications like Google Earth in a big way, it is the world of games that will attain a new dimension in the near future. Well, when it comes to the performance of O3D, you have to wait and see.
