Sony has released a free firmware update for its NEX interchangeable lens cameras that allows you to shoot in 3D. The company says the free upgrade also improves the normal 2D Sweep Panorama shooting, reduces power drain when the camera is off and delivers faster start-up in low-light conditions.

The new update adds several improvements plus 3D Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button and sweep the camera from side to side. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 shoot a high-speed burst of frames that are automatically combined inside the camera to create a seamless panoramic still image containing depth information. Sweep Panoramas can be enjoyed in 3D when the camera is connected to your 3D BRAVIA or any standards-compatible 3D TV.
Version 02 firmware also improves the 2D panorama sweep mode, as well as decreasing battery drain and adds a quicker startup in dimly lit places. So you may as well get the update even if you’re not interested in the 3D functionality.
