Tim “Day of the Tentacle” Schafer’s studio serves up smiles, superheroes and structural payment systems

Free-to-buy, not-so-free-to-play games have made an iTunes mint for Clash of Clans et al. Now Double Fine, the studio of games industry legend Tim Schafer, is getting in on the act.

Known for his work on such cult classics as Day of the Tentacle, Psychonauts and the Monkey Island series, not to mention doing PR wonders for Kickstarter as a viable funding model, Schafer and friends here bring that trademark humour to an iOS take on the task-management sim.

As a Leisure Suit Larry-esque sad sack you must hire, train and manage your team of budget crime fighters, would-be Watchmen called Captain Premium and the like, fending off comic-book villains to keep your map free of crime and team levelled up. In turn, you must collect – or, somewhat inevitably when the going gets tough, purchase ¬coins and “Superium” for upgrades aplenty.

Part Theme Hospital, part XCOM, it’s a fun, beautifully drawn, occasionally frantic adventure. Though we’ll ask one more time: when will we get a touchscreen Day of the Tentacle? Now Disney owns Lucasarts, surely this has to happen?

Bedlam The Game Book Comes of Age

Read the novel, play the adventure, with Christopher Brookmyre’s ebook-cum-shooter opus, Bedlam

Crafted storylines and zinging dialogue are not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about first-person shooters. Yet that could change as prolific Scottish crime writer Christopher Brookmyre has partnered with developer RedBedlam to bring his upcoming trilogy of novels – “the video-game equivalent of High Fidelity” – to life.

“It used to be that if someone asked, ‘What were you doing in 1984?’ you thought about the movies you were watching and the music you were listening to,” Brookmyre tells TechyShell, “but increasingly people think about the games they were playing.”

Bedlam tells the story of Ross, who is helping a pal test out his new brain-scanning machine in an R&D lab when he wakes to find himself trapped in the computer, forced to engage in the games on its hard drives. Brookmyre promises “a compendium of games; for the hardened gamer, the connoisseur”. But how did it come about?

“My love of first-person shooters has had its manifestation in a number of my books and RedBedlam contacted me,” Brookmyre explains. “I love Quake, so I was writing books that allowed me to have people running through corridors with machine guns.

“RedBedlam suggested the idea of a character trapped within a video game, like Tron, but the eureka moment for me came when I thought, ‘What if you’re not the hero? What if you’re the cannon fodder?’ I then wrote a lengthy treatment and it became the roadmap for the book.”

The first novel, Bedlam, is out now on ebook and in hardback, with the first game set to follow in early 2014 with the paperback’s release.

“RedBedlam was alarmed at the speed at which I was writing the book,” he says. “You can write a novel much faster than you can create a game:’ However, time is being taken to do justice to the game, with a cross-platform release on PC, Mac, iOS and Android.

The idea is a meta-game that plays with changing production values. “You could go from a graphically modern game to one from the ’90s, but you’d still have the machine gun from the previous game,” teases Brookmyre. “Right now, the ball is very much in RedBedlam’s court. It’s a case of seeing what they can do technologically.” If it can get close to the artwork in our exclusive storyboard (previous page), we could be in for some fun.

The source material is at times ludicrously bloody, with a sense of slapstick violence that’s set to be make the leap on to the screen. “I like to lather it on because people are so hysterical about violence in video games,” says Brookmyre. “Saying Grand Theft Auto would make you want to steal cars is like saying Tomb Raider would make you want to grow tits.”

So despite being a book first, Bedlam is a project built from the moment of conception with gaming and garners in mind. Blood, guns, a healthy smattering on in-jokes and a sci-fi geek’s premise of plenty, here’s to playing it this time next year…

BMW’s M135i piddles on the Prius’ eco chips courtesy of its sporty looks, near-50mpg fuel efficiency and tarmac-frazzling power. The icing on top? The tech inside…

Hold on to your stat hats, number fans; this hybrid bomb has numerals to die for. There’s 4.9 (seconds), for instance. That’s all it takes the new BMW M135i to nail the sprint to 62mph. Then there’s 155, its top speed in miles per hour – and this kinetic bundle of hatchback hotness has so much thrust, that’s an electronically limited figure; unrestrained, it’d be good for at least 170mph.

Here’s another number for you: 48.7mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Yup, just short of 50mpg (ooch!) for a 3.0-litre (pow!), 320hp (zing!) petrol model. Is that enough numbers for you? It is? Okay, we’ll stop.

The eco-Bimmer’s petrol-sipping parsimony is belied by the addictive zing of its turbocharged, straight-six engine. It’d show any 70$ supercar a clean pair of heels.

As well as having as much speed as any mortal is going to want under their heel the eight-speed gearbox, though it’s a traditional one – albeit with paddle shifters – is sharp enough to leave you wondering whether dual-clutch is such a must after all. Furthermore, like all BMW 1 Series, the Mini is rear-wheel drive. That gives its chassis and handling a purity and adjustability that front-and all-wheel drive alternatives can’t get near.

Inside, there’s BMW’s iDrive platform. It’ll set you back a hefty £2,000 for the top-end configuration, but for that you get a glorious, 8.8-inch hi-def LCD display and all the same cutting-edge functionality that you’ll find in bigger BMWs, from slick 3D mapping to internet connectivity and remote services – see right for more deets.

Yes, iDrive has copped some flak over the years for its overly simplistic, rotary input, but that’s been subject to constant revision and the latest version is the closest thing you’ll find to in-car kit made by Apple. iDrive really is as good as it gets.

Finally, here’s one more number, and perhaps the most important of all. This low-fuel, high-fun BMW’s base price undercuts Audi’s RS3 by around £10,000. It’s also only three grand more than Vauxhall’s rowdy but relatively low-rent Astra VXR. The stats impress, but the M135i is more than the sum of its parts. Power + tech + economy = the most exciting way we can think of to help save the planet…

iDrive’s 3D maps are sexy but this is the most useful nav function. Plot your route on Google Maps at home and then quite literally “Send” it “to” your “Car” – hence the name!

iDrive web connectivity now includes smartphone sync and app support for Facebook and Twitter – do not use while driving

Dead Space 3

EA’s strategic dismemberment scare-fest adds more guns, enemies and a second pair of hands…

The first two Dead Spaces were not our underpants’ best friend. Its Event Horizon-meets-The Thing-meets¬Resident Evil 4 hybrid of sci-fi, puzzles and long “quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet, aaargh what the hell is that!?” walks had us rapt and on the edge of a heart attack in equal measure.

Well, happily/scarily Dead Space 3 builds on this established formula in pretty much every way. It again has spaceship engineer turned alien annihilator Isaac Clarke – referencing Asimov and Arthur C, natch – taking on the shape-shifting Necromorphs by shooting off particularly dangerous parts

first. Yet now there’s more enemies (beware Swarm Infectors), more action (grappling cliff faces while under attack), more weapons (souped-up tools give way to proper guns) and more help on hand, with co-op in the shape of Isaac’s weapon-customising, more¬than-slightly loopy sidekick John Carver.

The fact that Dead Space 3 incorporates a buddy dynamic, not to mention Kinect (see below), without undermining the series’ atmosphere of loneliness is a feat; that each character is not necessarily always seeing or fighting the same thing certainly helps…
